Borrowing wisely, in practice

A few pointers to prepare your project and compare offers with peace of mind.

Preparing your budget before borrowing

Before applying, list your regular income and fixed outgoings: rent or mortgage payment, current loans, maintenance payments, insurance, subscriptions. What remains each month is your disposable income.

A new monthly payment should never put this disposable income at risk. Keep a margin for unexpected expenses: it is better to borrow a little less, or over a little longer, than to put your budget under strain.

Understanding the APR

The annual percentage rate of charge (APR) measures the real cost of a loan: it includes interest, arrangement fees and other mandatory charges, expressed as an annual percentage.

To compare two offers, compare their APR and total cost, not just the monthly payment. A lower monthly payment obtained through a longer term generally costs more overall.

Measuring your debt-to-income ratio

The debt-to-income ratio compares your total monthly loan repayments with your net income. Lenders use it to assess your ability to repay, together with other factors such as the stability of your income and your disposable income.

There is no single rule for all loans and all countries: the assessment of your application takes your whole situation into account.

Protecting yourself against loan scams

Fake loan scams are common. Be wary of any request for payment before the funds are released: arrangement fees to pay in advance, “insurance” to pay, or buying vouchers or prepaid cards.

We will never ask you for a password, a bank code or an advance payment. If in doubt about a message received in our name, contact us only through the contact details on this website and check the institution's registration with the competent authority.
